Early History:

The earliest known inhabitants of the area now known as Limestone County were Native American tribes such as the Karankawa, Comanche, and Apache. In the early 1800s, Spanish explorers traveled through the area on their way to the missions in East Texas. The first Anglo settlers arrived in the 1830s and began establishing farms and ranches.


Formation of Limestone County:

Limestone County was officially formed on April 11, 1846, from parts of Robertson, Milam, and Nacogdoches counties. The county seat was initially established in Springfield, but it was later moved to the town of Groesbeck in 1873.

Civil War Era:

During the Civil War, Limestone County was a stronghold for the Confederacy. Several Confederate regiments were raised in the county, and the area was heavily defended against Union forces. In 1865, following the end of the war, Union soldiers occupied the county, and Reconstruction began.

Post-Civil War:

After the Civil War, Limestone County experienced rapid growth and development. The county's economy was largely based on agriculture, with cotton being the main crop. In the late 1800s, railroads were built through the county, which helped to increase trade and commerce.

20th Century:
